I guess it’s in my blood

The death of the Pope and all the subsequent news coverage makes me feel more Catholic than I’m comfortable with or used to. After all, I left the Roman church for a more female-friendly Protestant denomination ten years ago. I’m actually tempted to go to one of the many memorial Masses being held this week—and I haven’t been to Mass by myself in YEARS.

I guess I’m just a weird religious hybrid—not Catholic, but tied to the Church anyway.

I’ve been told, “once a Catholic, always a Catholic.” I think it’s true in a way - we can never shake our childhood memories, for one thing, and Catholic indoctrination is pretty thorough, for another. Those smells and bells, they sneak into your soul and carve a permanent home. That’s been my experience.
