limbo time
Several hours later, I don’t think it’s going to be one of those days. Thank goodness.
We have some computer weirdness here at work with a couple of servers and databases that are sending false error reports (well, basically). And I’ve been trolling around for paperwork we have to complete to transfer the title of our car. And I had to clean the spilled coffee in my car. Little bits of nonsense to deal with.
But all in all, things are going OK. So I’ve been looking at computers online. I’m trying to decide when to buy my new laptop. Should I wait until after WWDC 2005, when Apple might announce updates to PowerBooks? The main problem with waiting is if they announce a major upgrade. I don’t want the first version of a new PowerBook—they’re always buggy. But I don’t want to buy now if they do get updated just a little, like a speed or memory bump. Oh, the dilemma! Such things I have to worry about!
Um, so yeah. It’s just a slow week, you know? We are maintaining here, not upgrading or revising or anything labor- or thought-intensive. Just more of the same.

I’m about to spring for a new laptop as well. I love Apples and am dead sick of PCs, but I’m strictly looking for an ultraportable, and all Apple laptops weigh at least 5 lbs.
Are you committed to the Apple?
Yep. I have absolutely no desire to switch my personal computing over to a PC. Mr. Angst has plethoras of PCs if i need one for a given reason.
The PB 12″ is only 4.6 lbs and has a built in optical drive. Pretty light for what it is.
Yeah, but I speak from experience. The difference between 2.9 lbs (Asus s5N) and 4.6 lbs will become noticeable to one’s shoulder. Still, love apples.
You probably already looked into this, but don’t some schools not allow Apples for exams?
Many schools don’t allow Apples for exams… such as mine. But for those occasions they offer two solutions: 1) they will provide you a loaner laptop; 2) you can take in on a lab computer. This offers one distinct benefit: if something goes wrong with the computer, the school is responsible.
I’ve never had a problem with it…
But I feel your pain. I desperately want a new PB for next year… but to buy one now? When I know a G5 PB *has* to be coming sometime? And as you mentioned, 1st generation Apple hardware is just not a good choice. *sigh* It sucks.
Yeah, a lot of schools use exam software that doesn’t work on a Mac. Luckily, my school doesn’t use exam software, but even if it did, I would still get a Mac and use Mr. Angst’s laptop for exams. That’s reason #954 to love my new school—I can use my own computer for exams!
hey, i use an ibook, and i didn’t really find it too heavy to carry from home to law school. also, i commute on public transportation, so if anyone would be concerned about having a heavy computer, it would be me. don’t listen to the pc-promoting naysayers.
I’m not a naysayer! I love Apples. But miniaturization is a top priority for me.
