freshness right around the corner

This post over at Transmogriflaw’s place reminded me of something I wished I’d taken a picture of last weekend on our apartment-hunting trip.

After signing our lease, we did some wandering, acquainting ourselves with the area. We found the grocery store, the blockbuster, the Subway, and a Dunkin’ Donuts. We found the drugstore, where we stopped quickly for bottled water—we were both a little jittery from our giant morning coffees. Next to the drugstore, we noticed white tents along the street and wondered what was going on—a street festival? So as we came out, we took a gander—and discovered it was a beautiful farmer’s market. Right there. Two blocks from our apartment. Fresh herbs, lovely plump tomatoes, free trade coffee—they had it all.

The best, though, was the long table spread with nothing but asparagus, beautifully green with pale purple ends. Nestled among the bunches was a long piece of cardboard with a handwritten message:

“Fresh Asparagus. Picked yesterday at 4:23 pm.”

I looked it up—our farmer’s market runs to the end of October. I think we’ll be eating some asparagus this fall. Definitely a Good Thing.

keep on truckin’, baby

Just reserved our moving truck. To all who might be moving this summer, and doing it themselves—I highly recommend Penske if they’re in your area. Half the price of that other company whose name is synonymous with moving trucks. Free mileage, too.

It’s just one more thing to keep making it real.

i just don’t get it

Why do parents let their children run around barefoot in public buildings? And I don’t mean toddlers, here, I mean older, school-aged children. It’s just as bad as a grown person walking around barefoot in a public building. These floors are gross! Plus, this is a PUBLIC BUILDING. It is a place of business for many people. Put some shoes on.
