wow, that crept right up on me

So this is the week we go to find our new apartment home in Our New City. I am crossing my fingers for much good luck—that we’ll find the perfect place on the first day, that we can start our lease on the day we want to, and that it will all be totally affordable.

Yeah, my optimism might be getting the better of me here.

So I’ll also be doing some looking on Craigslist and some other, similar, websites this week. I want to have some backups in hand if we need them.

Looking for an apartment long-distance is a pain.

Good luck, I hope you find a great place right away! In anticipation of your arrival from the south, we’ll turn the heat up for you. :)

Originally I thought I would attend either a Midwest or CA school, so when I searched for apartments online, I used Google to look for a reputable management company.

How about checking out http://www.rent.com and other online listings? Do you know if anyone else who had tried this and recommended it?

The best is if you know someone else living in that city and ask them about the area which the apartment is located at. Ask the recruitment officer or get in touch with some current students to see where most law students live at.

Yeah, I should have mentioned: we’re meeting with an apartment locator on the first day of our trip; we’re reserving day 2 for the other stuff—either places I’ve found on craigslist, etc., or places I’ve found on apartments.com, rent.com, etc. etc. etc.

I think anything we’d find on apartments.com and the like we’ll be able to see with the locator. And I am pretty sure of the neighborhoods and such. So it’s just a matter of worrying if we’ll actually be able to find a place we LIKE that’s in our preferred area, at our preferred price THIS WEEKEND. I don’t want to end up signing a lease from afar because we couldn’t find anything this weekend. Eek!

It’s this weekend? Exciting! Good luck finding a place you like. What’s the housing market like in New City?

As for rent.com, apartments.com, etc., I think they’re pretty useless. Almost all the listings are huge complexes that advertise all over the place. You’re unlikely to find a good deal, or a place that’s not in a hundred-unit building, with those sites.

The housing market is actually pretty good. Rents are affordable (not much higher than in Current City), and in the areas we’re looking at there are a lot of new buildings and rehabs going on. I have heard the word “glut” more than once, and think that can only be to our benefit.

And I am of the same opinion of rent.com. I’d rather live in a smaller building or duplex or three-/four-flat than in a mega-unit high rise.
