minor whine

So hey, y’all? Remember me? I’m a law student?

So, um, I’m a STUDENT, right? And I’ve got, like, two-and-more-than-a-half years left of school, OK? So will someone please help me understand why I should be thinking about finding a JOB, like NOW?

When you find out, let me know. I’m in an exercise wheel and my foot’s stuck in a rung, I swear. This is why they call it a rat race?

This was one of the biggest shocks in law school for me. By the time I realized there were positions available for 1Ls (summer), they had long since been filled.

FWIW, I think you should be concerned with finding a job now primarily if you’re thinking about trying to get a job with a BigFlaw firm. Those positions fill up quickly, and you need to send in a resume/cover letter (you can send in grades when you get them) if you think you want to do that over the summer.

Other positions are a bit more relaxed — you can certainly wait until after first semester to apply, IMO.

As far as an actual Job when you graduate, again, unless it’s a Bigflaw job you’re after, that’s B.S.

That’s about the only thing I like about being a “non-traditional” student… I already have a job!

I think it depends on where you’re at and what you want to do. Even if I had stayed in LSC, I’m not sure I would have found a job, BigFlaw or not. I think the area where I lived was sort of oversaturated and there was a much better school close by, so all the places would overlook St. C’s graduates in favor of that school. I would try to do *something*, even if it’s just being a research assistant for a professor or something like that. Make some connections. Get to know someone.

Then again, I had a legal job every summer and look where it got me.
