the hallows, they are deathly. (not a spoiler, don’t freak out)

So for everyone concerned, my Harry Potter did arrive on Monday, as it was supposed to, even though DHL couldn’t manage to update its tracking information. For at least three hours after it was delivered, DHL’s package tracker was still telling me my book was in transit from Ohio on Sunday morning.

Ah well–the price we pay, right?

At any rate, Mr. Angst was home, so he got to read it first. I read it yesterday. And it was good. No spoilers here, but I will note that a couple of my guesses (made after Book 6) were pretty spot on. So, yay! I’m now in the middle of reading it a second time, because that’s what I have to do when I’ve blazed through a book the first time–I have to go back in and get the nuance. Mr. Angst is taking the more extreme measure of rereading all six prior books so he can go in and pick up all the little references Rowling makes to events that occurred in those books.

With that, though, I have to run. Work calls!

It’s all computerized now, right? Then why is this so hard?

I really don’t think I like any of the major package shipping companies. FedEx Ground bites, UPS generally sucks, and now I can hate DHL.

Because somewhere between Ohio and me, a truck with my copy of Harry Potter has gotten lost. Or maybe the driver decided to go home, since it was Sunday, planning to just finish the trip to Our New City[1] this morning. Or maybe the computer system takes Sunday nights off, too, and just hasn’t updated any information. My book could be out for delivery (best case scenario) or headed for the West Coast (worst case scenario). I just don’t know and DHL isn’t helping me figure it out.

Boo.

  1. I think I have to think up a new name for this place. After two years, it’s not really New anymore.

a funny moment

Mr. Angst and I went to a neighborhood festival last night with this weekend’s houseguest. As we were walking towards the entrance, I saw a familiar face walk past me. He didn’t see me, and it took me a few seconds to place him (read: he was already past by the time I figured out who he was). So I didn’t say hi to this acquaintance of mine or anything. But it bothered me that it took me so long to figure out who he was–he’s someone I saw a lot of at school both my first and second years. Finally I figured it out:

I didn’t recognize him because he’s taking the bar on Tuesday.

I hoped for his sake that he was taking a scheduled break, that he was just stopping in for one beer before going back to study. But all I could think was, “Good luck, man. Good luck.”

That goes for all of you, actually–good luck on the bar!

things you wish you had realized sooner

A few moments ago, I looked down and realized I just walked Himself for 45 minutes around the neighborhood with my zipper completely down.

Awesome.

It’s fine though; I’m at home now, sitting at my (pretty new) workstation,[1] and Himself is lying at my feet. Not a bad way to spend part of a Saturday afternoon, when you have work to do.

  1. Over the last few weeks I bought a desk (no hutch, though) and an office chair. I’ve already outfitted with the desk with the extra monitor, my New Yorker tear-off daily calendar, and my Bluebook. I’m currently trying to figure out how to get all my style manuals situated on top also, but I think that’s just not going to happen.

you’ve been warned

If anyone–and I mean ANYONE–spoils Harry Potter for me before my British copy arrives from the UK (probably Monday), I will hurt them. That includes the stupid MSM and all bloggers I regularly read.

You’ve been warned.

July 18th 2007

Dude. If you see that, go to the ER.

I used the Symptom Checker on the recommendation of a fellow blogger. I was just checking to see what funny things it would come up with to explain “weight gain and bloating in the tummy because of too much food paid for on someone else’s dime.” (For the record: many of its responses were acceptable.) The thing I found funny was that a potential symptom for abdominal ailments was “worm in stool.” Because that needs explanation?

weekend recap

This weekend, Mr. Angst and I made a quick trip down the road to the Angst-in-laws’ to celebrate both his mom’s and our nephew’s birthdays. But because I had a late meeting Friday, we couldn’t leave till Saturday, which means we spent about 10 hours on the highway in the space of about 36 hours. Whee! Even better, when Mr. Angst went to pick up the rent car on Friday evening, they had no CARS left, only a MINIVAN. So we drove those 10 hours in a very ungainly, black grocery-getter. Fun!

Size and coolness factor aside, the minivan had other negative implications. Himself, who usually sits on the backseat in car trips, where he can see the scenery pass by, had to sit on the floor in his crate, because the middle seat in the minivan had bucket seats and the backseat was too small for the crate. He did not like this, not one bit, and spent the entire trip down on Saturday morning sitting up in his crate, staring at me, panting, and pressing his nose through the wires, like a little jailbird. He didn’t sleep at all. Upon arriving, he promptly peed, pooped, and vomited all over Angst-in-laws’ backyard. More fun!

The weekend got better after that, though–our two-year-old nephew is adorable, and becoming quite the chatterbox. And it was nice to get out of town for a bit, even if the temperature was 10 degrees hotter there than in Our New City. I will say, though, that I’ve never seen more people wearing Crocs than I did when we ventured out–nearly every kid I saw all weekend was wearing them, and most parents were, too. (Yes, the Angst nephew has Crocs, but he sensibly wore sneakers most of the weekend. More stable for his young legs.)

At any rate, we’re home now, and getting back into our routine. I’ve even finished my journal grading! Himself is sleeping peacefully (finally!), the air conditioning is blasting (finally!), and I’m lounging comfortably. Too bad I have to be back at work early tomorrow morning.

July 4th 2007

She’s BACK!

Oh, hooray! E. Spat is back! Everyone run over and tell her you’re glad she’s back. Because I’M glad she’s back.

Himself luuuuuuuvs me

Today, I had to stay late at work to get a couple of things done. This meant that I didn’t take Himself on his evening walk, Mr. Angst did. So his walking time was right around the time when I came home. Usually I would take the west elevator, which is on the same side of the building as our apartment, but I wanted to check the mail, so I went around the other side of the building. After stopping at the mailboxes, I walked toward the east elevator, which also happens to be the pet elevator (dogs aren’t allowed in the other one).

As I walked toward the elevator, I saw a super cute brown and white dog sitting patiently with its owner. I thought to myself, THAT is a super cute little dog. And then I realized, a split second later, WAIT! That’s MY dog! Himself realized I was me right around the same split second, because he jumped to all fours, his tail wagging off his body as I came closer.

I’m sure the other lady sharing the elevator with us thought Himself was the worst little dog ever, because he was just going INSANE. He was whimpering-whining and jumping up to lick my face and hands, and really just going CRAZY. But once she saw that he was just really happy to see his Mom, she smiled a little, even if she did step back into the corner of the elevator while Himself tried to crawl up my leg.

But at the time, all I could think was how cool it was that my dog loves me that much. He’s a good boy.
